Building on the Past to Shape the Future

The last Sector Ministers' Meeting, in 2022, was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Ministers responsible for water, sanitation, and hygiene came together with their counterparts responsible for climate, environment, health, and the economy.

Over 350 delegates—53 ministers and 57 government delegations—explored how to integrate these vital services into policies and strategies.

  • "The Sector Ministers’ Meeting took Indonesia’s water and sanitation sector to a new level. Before, we mainly worked with local governments and development partners. Now we have more chances to engage at the ministerial level and with key decision-makers."

Tri Dewi Virgiyanti, Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), Indonesia

  • “Being part of a Sector Ministers’ Meeting that also tackles the theme of climate change is important for a country like Chad. All the learnings from the SMM related to climate will be included into our climate national plan.”

H.E. Mr. Alio Abdoulaye Ibrahim, Minister, Chad

  • “We regard these meetings as critical because it reminds us all that in order to succeed in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 6, it requires real collaboration between countries, within countries, between sector ministers.”

Kevin Rudd, Former Prime Minister of Australia

  • Zimbabwe already has a live database which shows which of our 19,500 water points have broken down. [...] We’re going to integrate that into our planning process so that we’re able to show the financiers that there is evidence-based budgeting.

Dr. Anxious J. Masuk, Minister of Lands, Zimbabwe

  • "The SWA ministerial meetings serve as a crucial avenue for global leaders to monitor progress and mobilize innovative access to clean water and sanitation, ultimately keeping us on track towards meeting SDG 6".

Amina Mohammed, United Nations Deputy Secretary General
